CUMMINS POWERS THE WORLD’S MOST ADVANCED AUTONOMOUS BUS PILOT

Cummins B6.7 Euro VI engines are powering the UK’s first full-size autonomous buses in a ground-breaking pilot running across the iconic Forth Bridge in Scotland.

CUMMINS POWERS THE WORLD’S MOST ADVANCED AUTONOMOUS BUS PILOT

Five Alexander Dennis Enviro200AV single deck buses have been equipped with sensor and control technologies to enable them to run on pre-selected roads, without the need for a driver. Although current UK legislation mandates the need for a driver to sit behind the wheel at all times – and one will be present on each bus - they will not be expected to operate the controls during autonomous operation.

The fourteen mile route begins next month and runs between Edinburgh and Fife to demonstrate the viability of autonomous bus services. As well as improved safety, the project will realise energy savings through AI-optimised acceleration and braking.

The scheduled autonomous bus service could be used by up to 10,000 passengers per week and runs on a route comprising a range of driving scenarios including pedestrianised bus and train stations, single carriageways and a motorway. The bus will operate autonomously throughout, all while navigating live traffic.

The CAVForth project, as it is known, is managed by Fusion Processing in connection with several partners including Alexander Dennis, Stagecoach and Transport Scotland. It is part funded by the UK government’s Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV).
