Volkswagen turns the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours into the centerpiece of its GTI 50th anniversary celebrations with the world premiere of the fully electric ID. Polo GTI and a strong motorsport presence. Volkswagen will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the GTI badge during the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours by combining the world premiere of a new high-performance electric model with a major motorsport presence at one of the most demanding endurance races in international racing.
From May 14 to 17, 2026, the German brand will transform Nürburgring into the center of GTI celebrations, commemorating half a century of performance, innovation and driving excitement.
World premiere of the first fully electric GTI
One of the highlights of the weekend will be the official debut of the new ID. Polo GTI, presented at the Nürburgring Ring-Boulevard in front of thousands of motorsport fans. The model marks a historic milestone for Volkswagen as the first fully electric vehicle to carry the legendary GTI badge. With this launch, Volkswagen opens a new chapter for the GTI family by bringing the model’s performance identity into the era of electric mobility while maintaining the traditional values of driving dynamics, emotion and everyday usability that have defined GTI since 1976.
The world premiere will take place during Germany’s largest motorsport event, which is expected to attract around 280,000 spectators.
Volkswagen targets racing success with three Golf GTI Clubsport 24h cars
In addition to the premiere of the new electric model, Volkswagen will compete in the Nürburgring 24 Hours with three Golf GTI Clubsport 24h race cars developed specifically for the extreme endurance challenge. Two of the vehicles will compete in the SP4T class with special anniversary liveries celebrating 50 years of GTI. The number 50 Golf GTI Clubsport 24h will be driven by Volkswagen development and test driver Benjamin Leuchter alongside eight-time FIA World Rallycross champion Johan Kristoffersson and Nürburgring specialists Heiko Hammel and Nico Otto.
The team is targeting a third consecutive class victory for Volkswagen. The second SP4T-class Golf GTI Clubsport 24h, carrying number 76, will feature Fabian Vettel, Timo Hochwind, Jonathan Mogotsi and Nico Otto behind the wheel. A third Golf GTI Clubsport 24h, numbered 10, will compete in the SP3T class and will be driven by former German national football player Max Kruse together with Christoph Lenz, Matthias Wasel and Jens Dralle. All three race cars will be prepared and operated by Germany-based Max Kruse Racing.
Technical upgrades for Nürburgring endurance competition
The Golf GTI Clubsport 24h features several technical upgrades compared with last season’s specification. The race car delivers 397 hp (291 kW) and has been further optimized specifically for the extreme demands of the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Among the new features is an active transmission cooling system designed to improve reliability during the 24-hour endurance race. Volkswagen has also refined engine calibration to optimize both performance and durability under continuous high-load operation. The GTI race car also incorporates additional lightweight construction measures using carbon-fiber composite components. After introducing carbon-fiber doors in 2025, the new version now also features a carbon-fiber rear hatch. Thanks to these measures, the vehicle weighs only 1,200 kilograms without the driver, supporting both agility and performance. The racing chassis has also been extensively revised to cope with the unique characteristics of the Nordschleife, known for its high-speed corners, elevation changes and extreme mechanical loads.
E20 fuel with renewable raw materials
All three Golf GTI Clubsport 24h cars will run on E20 fuel produced with 60 percent renewable raw materials. According to Volkswagen, the fuel combines high performance with reduced CO₂ emissions in motorsport applications. The use of alternative fuels forms part of Volkswagen’s sustainability strategy in racing and reflects the growing importance of lower-emission technologies in endurance motorsport.
Nürburgring showcases GTI heritage and future direction
Throughout the race weekend, Volkswagen will also display several performance and concept vehicles in the public Ring-Boulevard area. Among the highlights is the Golf R 24H3 show car, which offers an early preview of Volkswagen’s future Nürburgring race car planned for the 2027 24-hour race.
Another key attraction will be a historic parade featuring approximately 40 GTI models from all eight generations of the iconic performance hatchback.
The vehicles will drive around the Nordschleife shortly before the start of the main race as a tribute to GTI history and Volkswagen fans. The new ID. Polo GTI will also participate in the anniversary parade.
GTI: five decades of accessible performance
Since the launch of the first Golf GTI in 1976, the GTI badge has become one of the most recognizable symbols in the compact performance car segment. Over five decades, Volkswagen has developed multiple GTI generations known for combining strong performance, sporty technology and everyday practicality. The arrival of the new ID. Polo GTI represents a strategic evolution of this identity toward electrification while maintaining the emotional and performance-oriented character historically associated with the GTI name.
Additional Context: performance electrification and competitive benchmarking not included in the original announcement
The introduction of the first fully electric GTI positions Volkswagen within a new phase of the electrified performance compact segment, where manufacturers including Hyundai, MINI, Peugeot, Alpine and Abarth are also developing high-performance electric models for the European market.
Key competitive factors in this segment include driving dynamics, battery range, charging speed, digital integration and emotional brand differentiation. At the same time, Nürburgring continues to strengthen its role as a strategic platform for European manufacturers using endurance racing and lap records as tools for technology development and brand positioning.
Volkswagen’s strategy combines GTI heritage, electrification, motorsport and alternative fuels to reinforce the relevance of the GTI brand during the transition toward electric performance mobility.
