Hydrogen technology demonstration in international motorsport

During a technical demonstration on the Monaco Grand Prix street circuit, the hydrogen-powered GR Yaris Rally2 H2 Concept was driven by Akio Toyoda, known in motorsport as Morizo. The initiative forms part of Toyota’s strategy to explore low-emission propulsion technologies for the future of rallying and endurance racing.

Strategic context and technological vision
For several years, Toyota has been advancing the development of hydrogen-powered competition vehicles with the aim of combining carbon neutrality with the performance characteristics expected in motorsport. The Monaco demonstration represents the continuation of an approach that uses racing and rallying as a technology testbed to validate alternative powertrain solutions.

Akio Toyoda has been directly involved in multiple demonstration and competition activities, including the 2022 WRC Rally Ypres with a hydrogen-powered GR Yaris, the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans centenary with the GR Corolla H2 Concept, and several Super Taikyu races in Japan using prototypes fueled by both gaseous and liquid hydrogen.

The GR Yaris Rally2 H2 Concept
The GR Yaris Rally2 H2 Concept is an experimental vehicle developed to evaluate the use of hydrogen in top-level rally competition. The project aims to demonstrate that hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines can deliver high performance, dynamic response, and the distinctive acoustic character of motorsport, while significantly reducing CO₂ emissions.

Presenting the vehicle on Monaco’s urban circuit provided an opportunity to showcase the technology to an international audience, including teams, manufacturers, organizers, and key stakeholders from across the global motorsport community.

Implications for WRC, WEC, and W2RC
The initiative aligns with broader discussions across major international motorsport disciplines, including the World Rally Championship, the World Endurance Championship, and the World Rally-Raid Championship. Toyota views hydrogen as a potential long-term solution alongside evolving technical standards and regulatory frameworks.

Outlook
With future programs already announced, ongoing work on regulations and standards, and growing interest from manufacturers, hydrogen could become a significant element of international motorsport. From Toyota’s perspective, motorsport remains a critical platform for accelerating technological development and validating solutions that support a more sustainable future for racing, without compromising performance.
