Stellantis Launches “HVO Aurora” Trial: A New Step Toward Cleaner Mobility in Europe

Stellantis has announced the launch of HVO Aurora, an innovative project designed to help businesses reduce CO₂ emissions by using eco-friendly fuels in their light commercial vehicle (LCV) fleets. The initiative is supported by Stellantis Pro One commercial vehicles business unit and was developed within Star*Up, Stellantis’ internal intrapreneurship program that empowers employees to turn innovative ideas into real projects.

What is HVO Aurora?
HVO Aurora focuses on monitoring, verifying, and reporting the real-world use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) — a renewable fuel made from waste materials such as used cooking oils and animal fats that can help reduce CO₂ emissions.

The project introduces an easy-to-use tracking and certification system that records fuel type, trip distance, and consumption. This information is securely uploaded to the cloud, giving businesses transparent, real-time proof of their actual use of low-carbon fuel and its environmental benefits.

“HVO Aurora shows how we can reduce well-to-wheel emissions immediately, using solutions that work with the vehicles our customers already rely on,” said Luca Marengo, Head of Product and Innovation for Stellantis Pro One. “At Stellantis Pro One, we remain committed to providing practical and scalable ways to help businesses reduce full cycle emissions now. This project is a concrete step forward in building a cleaner future for mobility in Europe.”

A European Demonstration Begins
Stellantis launched a month-long European road tour in collaboration with SP3H, a French company specializing in intelligent sensors for low-carbon fuels. Two Stellantis vans (a Citroën Berlingo and a Fiat Professional Ducato) equipped with SP3H’s connected FluidBox Micro sensor embarked on a journey across Europe to collect real-world usage data.

Their mission is simple: to demonstrate that cleaner, traceable fuels can be used in existing vehicles — with no changes to fleets or infrastructure — offering a practical, complementary way to reduce well-to-wheel CO2 emissions.

As the vehicles travel across several European countries, the SP3H FluidBOX platform will transmit real-world data confirming HVO use and estimating CO₂ savings.

An Additional Path to Cleaner Mobility
This demonstration shows that cleaner mobility does not rely on one single solution. With on-board sensors that certify the use of low-carbon fuels, HVO Aurora provides an immediate, reliable, and inclusive complementary option to help reduce CO₂ emissions, especially for LCV fleets.

Good News for Existing Customers
All Stellantis cars and light-duty commercial vehicles currently on sale are already fully compatible with HVO diesel fuel (EN15940 fuel standard). Many Euro 5 and Euro 6 diesel vehicles currently on the road can also use it without any modification.

A Practical Way to Cut Emissions Today
Companies are looking for solutions that help them reduce their environmental impact right away. HVO Aurora supports this transition by enabling fleets to track and certify the use of renewable HVO fuel in their existing vehicles — a simple, immediate way to lower emissions without changing operations or infrastructure.
