The new bidirectional current-sense amplifiers deliver high accuracy and low bill-of-materials in industrial and automotive applications.

STMICROELECTRONICS PRESENTS NEW BIDIRECTIONAL CURRENT-SENSE AMPLIFIERS

With 100V-tolerant inputs and internally fixed gain, STMicroelectronics’ TSC2020 bidirectional current-sense amplifier ensures high accuracy and saves space by eliminating external components typically needed for protection and gain-setting configuration. It addresses applications such as servers, power tools, industrial motor control, and power supplies. It is also AEC-Q100 qualified, allowing use in automotive applications such as motor-controlled window lifters, battery management system (BMS), and traction inverters.

Suitable for high-side or low-side current sensing, the TSC2020 has a wide common-mode voltage range from -4V to 100V that allows use in 48V systems and at higher voltages. Precision internal circuitry ensures input offset voltage within ±150µV that helps to greatly reduce the external shunt resistor size, lowering power dissipation. Its ability to sense very low drop voltages helps minimize measurement errors. Common-mode rejection of at least 100dB ensures consistent accuracy when exposed to fluctuating common-mode voltages in applications such as inline motor control. Also, enhanced PWM rejection ensures high immunity to noise in motor drives and switched-mode power converters.

As well as saving external components, which reduces the bill of materials, the TSC2020’s fixed gain of 20V/V ensures high accuracy and stability with 0.3% gain error and 3.5ppm/°C drift. In addition, no trimming is required.
